Continuing on from the accomplishments of International Year of Astronomy 2009, the Japan Astronomy Council is an amalgamation of organizations (founded September 9, 2010) in which activities relating to astronomical research, education, promotion and amateur activities in Japan come together for the purpose of broadening understanding of astronomy and science in the community.

The Japan Astronomy Council comprises of the following 8 groups and organizations:

  • The Astronomical Society of Japan
  • National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ)
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
  • Japanese Society for Education and Popularization of Astronomy
  • Japan Planetarium Association (JPA)
  • Japan Public Observatory Society (JAPOS)
  • Japan Amateur Astronomers Association (JAAA)
  • Society for the preservation of starlit skies
